

The American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) is the independent non-profit organization recognized by the American Medical Association, to provide certification and review for ophthalmologists in the United States.
Though not required to practice ophthalmology, board certification attests the ophthalmologist undertakes ongoing education and training in their field, and regularly passes ABO standards review.
The American Board of Ophthalmology was founded in 1916, and was the first such board to certificy medical specialists in the United States. There are now 23 other specialty boards recognized by the American Medical Association and the American Board of Medical Specialties.
